Make Super New Year`s Resolutions

Many of us will have credit cards still warm from the holiday season. With the Reserve Bank’s interest rate cuts and the Government’s $8.9 billion economy boost, Christmas sales were ‘pleasantly surprising’ and ‘very good’ for retailers. The Boxing Day weekend stampede reportedly left many an Aussie’s credit cards smoking as we saw 2008 out with fireworks, parties and bargain prices on clothes, plasma TVs and furniture.

Stepping into a fresh 2009 with an anaemic bank balance and slight hangover, reality (read: economic slowdown) might be sinking in.  However, now is a great time to review your finances: you’ve made your contribution to the economy – now make a contribution to your future!  Here are 8 ways to tighten those financial reins so you can step into the New Year with confidence and work towards your dream retirement.

8 New Year`s Resolutions To Keep

“This year I shall…

  1. Draw up a budget and stick to it. I shall save up for things I want instead of putting them on credit.

  2. Set financial goals for myself. I shall work towards saving more for my retirement

  3. Rollover my super into one account.  Extra fees shall not eat into my retirement savings

  4. Review my super investment options. I shall consider my risk/return comfort level and change my investment option if necessary.

  5. Salary Sacrifice more into my super to turn more of my tax into savings. This can potentially drop me into a lower income tax bracket, so I shall ring my super fund to find out on (03) 9911 3222.

  6. Find out if I qualify for a Government co-contribution so I won`t miss out this year. If I earn less than $60,342 I may be entitled to a $1,500 super bonus from the government.

  7. Explore a Transition to Retirement Income Stream. It`s good to know I have the option of working less while still saving into my super.

  8. Review my insurance. There might be changes in my employment, earning capacity, assets and liabilities. I shall ensure my family and I are adequately protected.

… with help from my super fund.”
