Remember that market ups and downs are a normal part of long-term investing.
When significant events happen, we sometimes see markets react negatively and this can impact your super balance. At times like these, it can be disconcerting to see the value of your super fall and it’s easy to forget that share markets generally rise over the long-term.
Markets have historically experienced periods of decline and recovery, but the timing and extent of any recovery are uncertain*. In 2025, US President Donald Trump announced wide-ranging tariffs which initially sent share markets tumbling. However, they steadied as President Trump’s position softened and ultimately rebounded over time. Likewise, the emergence of COVID in 2019 prompted large falls in 2020, but as the pandemic eased, markets bounced back before entering a period of significant growth.
While no-one has a crystal ball, the key is to focus on your long-term strategy. Some Vision Super investment options are diversified across a range of asset classes, which may reduce sensitivity to movements in any one market. These options are also designed to perform over the longer term so short-term market movements may be less relevant for members focused on their long-term goals.
If you’re thinking about making any changes to how your super is invested, we recommend that you get financial advice. With Vision Super, you can receive advice from a Vision Super financial planner, sometimes at no additional costs to you.1.
To book an appointment, complete the online form or call the Contact Centre on 1300 300 820 (Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm).
